Exeter has been named among the UK cities growing its tech capabilities at the fastest rate.

A nationwide index created by fintech experts Dojo to find out which UK cities are improving their technological capabilities and access to technology at the fastest rate placed Exeter at 12th, ahead of Birmingham and Southampton.

The study looked at five relevant metrics in each city, which were scored to create an overall ‘tech-savvy index’ score out of 100. For each city, these included internet connectivity, digital skills, digital salaries and availability of tech jobs.

Exeter received a total index score of 53 out of 100, with an average salary of £53,165 for those working in the tech industry in the region. Some 81% of the region's population hold the five basic digital skills, giving them the opportunity to work in tech jobs and keep connected with others.

Jonathan Knott, Head of Customer Insights at Dojo said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how the world uses technology forever. Advancements have been forced to progress instantly to respond to user needs. This is a shift in the adoption of tech that we have never seen happen so quickly before. However, some cities across the world were more prepared than others due to their pre-existing technological infrastructure and landscape."
