DeepSeek and the future of AI: an interview with Anthony Peake
The whale logo of DeepSeek is making a splash across all corners of the internet this week, as the company claims to have delivered an AI rival to the US giants at a fraction of the cost.
SWTD sat down with Anthony Peake, CEO of Intelligent AI, to pick his brains on what the developments mean for the AI sector.
Firstly - are we to trust what DeepSeek is claiming?
There has been a lot of hype around DeepSeek and its supposed efficiency, especially given the company’s lack of access to Nvidia’s highest performing chips (due to US export controls) and the publicised cost of development.
I believe the company has achieved most of what it claims, but I believe it would have cost them more than the headline $6 million figure.
Should we be optimistic or pessimistic about this development?
I think it is good for the whole industry that there are competitors on the scene and especially innovative ones.
Monopolisation of a technology as important as AI can never be good, while competition will drive greater innovation from all parties. President Trump isn’t wrong when he calls it a “wake-up call” for US innovators.
Many people are raising the issue of data privacy concerns - are these fears justified?
The fact that DeepSeek is an open source model is great.
However, whether you believe that the Chinese Government will abuse the data provided by users, or that some western nations will block its use in some key sectors, I do think many commercial customers will be concerned about developing solutions based on DeepSeek.
