South West dominates latest Good Growth for Cities index
The South West region has emerged as the leader in sustainable and inclusive economic growth, according to the latest Demos-PwC Good Growth for Cities Index. This annual study, which measures the performance of UK cities against a range of factors important to the public, has placed several South West cities at the forefront of good growth.
Plymouth has secured the top position in the overall index, with Bristol in second place. Swindon and Exeter have also ranked highly, consistently scoring above the UK average in critical areas such as health & safety and skills development.
The West of England Combined Authority, encompassing Bristol, Bath, and surrounding areas, has maintained its status as the highest-performing combined authority in the country. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the region's devolved governance structure in delivering tangible benefits to its citizens.
Despite these successes, the index also reveals ongoing challenges, particularly in housing affordability. Like many UK regions, the South West is grappling with a widening gap between house prices and earnings, presenting a significant hurdle for many residents.
The Demos-PwC Good Growth for Cities Index is distinctive in its approach, incorporating factors such as work-life balance, job opportunities, and income levels alongside traditional economic metrics. This holistic view aims to provide a more comprehensive picture of regional prosperity and livability.
Rachel Taylor, Leader of Industry for Government and Health Industries at PwC UK, said: "As local leaders look forward to playing a greater part in delivering economic growth in their areas, they have a window of opportunity to take stock. They must use this time to reassess what their strengths and ambitions are for their areas and how they will grasp the fresh opportunities on the horizon."
